Nelson Letshwene

Author and Speaker

Welcome to my Notebook.

Below is an interview that will tell you a bit about myself:

Can you tell us a bit about your background (where did you grow up, where did you go to school, what did you study)?

I was born in Dennilton, South Africa. I went to school at St. Josef's. I went to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg and I studied a B.Com in Business Economics. I did my postgraduate studies at The University of South Africa, focusing on Personal Financial Management. I have been a speaker and a writer for over a decade, speaking on various topics of human motivation, and lately focusing on personal financial management.

You have written a number of books and you seem to have made a career out of writing. When did you first realize that you were a writer?

When I was in high school I wrote my first novel which I did not publish. But that's when I knew there was a writer in me.

I have since written numerous articles and booklets, and have published over 350 articles in the Newspapers, mainly the Botswana Guardian and other magazines.

Who were the most influential authors you have read?

I have read many authors who have impacted me in various areas of my life. Among these I would include clear thinkers and teachers such as Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Neale Donald Walsch, Ramtha, etc. In the world of Personal finance the clearest thinker I have read to date is Loral Langemeier. Their writings have inspired me to find more in me and to be willing to give more to the world.
My main teacher is Ramtha (www.ramtha.com). He is remarkable in his ability to teach the most difficult subjects with the simplest clarity.

Tell us about your current business

I run a Personal finance training business. I run training seminars and workshops on building a better relationship with your money. Most people have a dysfunctional relationship with their money. It does not matter how much one earns, if you have a dysfunctional relationship, the money seems to "slip through your fingers". Our programs cover this important psychological relationship. It is not just for the financially illiterate. It is for everyone who handles cash. The advanced course then focus on the planning function that helps people to find direction for their money and build a better future.

I also do diversity and change management workshops.

How do you structure your day for writing?

When I wrote FUNCTIONAL MASTERY OVER MY FINANCES, it took me about 18 months. This was mostly writing once a week. In the final weeks however, I had to put a lot of time to put it all together.
When I wrote ALL YOU NEED IS PURPOSE AND FAITH, I just devoted time to doing it. It took me about 10 weeks of full-time research and writing. For my other works like my weekly column, I write at various hours of the day, especially in the mornings. But because I run a flexible schedule, sometimes I can devote days to writing.

Do you prefer pen, typewriter or PC?

I write better and faster on the PC. I took typing at high school, therefore I touch type, which is faster than a pen. I like the convenience of the PC.

What are your experiences with publishers and agents?

I think everybody is trying to do their best to be helpful. Unfortunately if your manuscript is not in line with the publishers you approach, you might think they have something against you, but really they don't. I think electronic publishing is giving today's authors the control they lacked.

Do you have any advice to fledgling authors?

The problem with being an author is "perfectionism". Your manuscript is never ready. You just have to learn to let it go so it can take a life of its own.

"Perfectionism" creates fear of being criticized, and thus you hold your book back. Let it go!

What will the role of the Internet play in the future of publishing?

Think about it: It's instant. It's big. It puts the world at your fingertips. No more expensive printing costs in e-publishing. No more shipping! No more waiting. It brings the world's library at a desktop near you ...

What's your next project?

My next project is a sequel or companion to Functional Mastery Over My Finances. It is called The Seven Money Skills. I am also working on various audio programs in the area of personal finance.
I have other projects in the pipeline. Watch this space.
