“A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes life merry; but money is the answer for everything”

The Bible - Ecclesiastes 10:19

I can start by wishing you a happy New Year, but what’s the point of just a wish if we do nothing to bring it about? This is how we can make this a happy new year:

The first step is: it has to be new! This means, you can’t keep repeating the things of previous years and hope that something new will come out of it! That is a definition for insanity!

In the last column of last year we talked about the process of doing your 2010 budget. If you don’t have that column you can find it on my website at

The best way to go forward is to look back and review 2009. Using a STOP, CONTINUE, or START scale, make a list of all the things you need to stop doing. These are the things that are holding you back or are sabotaging your progress. Unless you stop these things, you will have more of the same this year as you did last year.

Now identify all the things that you need to continue doing. These are the good things that are helping you but need more resources or attention.

Finally, make a list of things you need to start doing. This is about setting a goal that you can accomplish. A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.

Make a list of 30 things. Yes, thirty! You can have categories if you like. Such as career, education, money, family, relationships, physical, health, fun, home, etc. Now, notice that anyone of these goals will need money.

That means making more money becomes your number one priority as far as I am concerned.

Now, make a list of 20 different ways you can make money. Yes 20! Many things on this list will be a variation of your current skills. Make a list of all your hobbies and see if you can’t build a business around those. Tap into areas you never thought you could make money out of. Keep brainstorming for over an hour! Yes, let there be a storm in your brain. Invariably, you will have to sell something!

If you need your group to help you brainstorm, then get together with your group and have a group brainstorming session. This is the beginning of the year! Don’t be lazy to do this exercise and please don’t postpone it indefinitely. If you can’t do it right now as you read this column, then set aside time so that you can do it before we reach the middle of January. Without a clear focus of what each month of this year is going to look like, then it will all be hazy! I don’t think you want another hazy year! Let’s keep talking.

Please participate! Don't watch life happenning! Make it happen!
